MIXED MEDIA by Linda Jasmin Mayer

In 7 sessions, Mayer guides you from an initial spark of an idea to your own finished mixed media project. And the journey doesn’t end there. At the end of the course, we will present the projects at a closing event of broei.lab at Kunsthal Gent.

THE BODY AS A STARTING POINT FOR ARTISTIC CREATION

In this workshop series we take the body as a starting point for artistic creation. We will work with wearable art objects that function as extensions of the body — something between sculpture, costume, and prosthesis. “Body” does not need to be understood literally: it can also be an object, a structure, or a space that we extend through art. These works are not only physical forms, but can also be understood as living, performative objects that question how art can extend the body, perception, or presence.

The sessions encourage experimentation with fabrics, collage, recycled and found objects, combined with audiovisual elements such as projection and sound. Participants will be invited to reflect on how wearable art can make social, ecological, and personal themes tangible, and how such objects move at the boundaries between visual art, performance, design, and technology.

From short material exercises we move towards developing personal concepts. The created objects will be tested in performative or spatial settings. The workshop culminates in a collective presentation where the works are shared with an audience.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• Introduction to the body as medium and carrier in art history & practice
• Experimenting with wearable forms: masks, prostheses, textile & sculptural assemblages
• Research with recycled/waste materials (second hand shops, found objects)
• Reflection on the political, ecological, and social meanings of the extended body
• Testing works in performative or spatial settings
• Development of a personal project, shown in a final presentation

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

• No prior knowledge required, only curiosity and willingness to experiment
• Comfortable clothing for hands-on work and movement
•A small contribution for (your own) materials (kept minimal thanks to reuse and sourcing)

ABOUT LINDA JASMIN MAYER

Linda Jasmin Mayer (*1986, Meran, Italy) is a visual artist based in Ghent, Belgium. Her work develops mainly through video art and installation, often with sculptural and participatory aspects. She explores themes of social alienation and the interplay between humanity and nature. In her practice, masks, wearable sculptures, and performative objects play a central role, extending the body into poetic, ecological, and social directions. Mayer’s work has been shown internationally, among others at Max Ernst Museum (Brühl), Biennale Gherdëina 9 (Val Gardena), M Leuven, Museo Nazionale della Montagna (Turin), BLANCO (Ghent) and MUSEION (Bolzano). In 2024 she received the Paul Flora Prize, awarded by the Province of Tyrol (AT) and the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol (IT).
