broei.lab* unfold** 3.0 - workshop 16 mm analog film
Always wanted to work with analog film? In this workshop series at broei.lab, you’ll explore the possibilities of 16mm and create your own short film step by step, from first idea to a finished work with both image and sound.
Together with other participants, you’ll learn how to work with a 16mm film camera, develop your own concept and explore how image and sound come together as a whole. You’ll experiment, learn by doing and receive guidance from experienced makers.
The series consists of four sessions - two film workshops and two audio workshops - where technique and concept come together. During the technical workshop, you’ll get to know how a 16mm camera works and learn how to operate it correctly. In the conceptual session, you’ll work on your idea and preparation. Since there is no image editing afterwards, you will edit your film entirely in-camera: you start your shooting day with a well-thought-out plan or a clear shot list.
Sound is an essential part of this trajectory. The 16mm camera we use (a Bolex) does not record sound, so during the audio workshops you’ll develop your own soundtrack. You’ll learn to work with different layers such as voice, ambient sound, foley and music, and create a soundtrack that will later be combined with your film. The workshops are designed to give you the tools and space to experiment, after which you independently create your own film and audio.
After the workshops, the shooting period begins. Over the course of two weeks, you’ll get one day of access to a 16mm camera via Camrent to shoot your film independently. You’ll physically hand in your film roll at broei.lab, after which we take care of the development. You’ll then have one month to finish your soundtrack and submit it digitally. Image and sound are brought together by us — meaning you’ll see your film for the first time during the collective screening on September 26 at Broei.
Because we work directly with film, we expect a basic knowledge of photography and light metering. It’s not an absolute requirement, but it is strongly recommended.

- 16mm film has no sound track. You submit a separate digital audio file afterwards
- Genre: The form is up to you (fiction, documentary, videoclip, experimental, …).
- Shooting period: Keep in mind you have 1 shooting day with the camera and will need to coördinate a handover with the previous and next participant.
