A COLLABORATION BETWEEN NERDLAB AND BROEI.LAB
In this workshop, we’ll combine digital making and analog film by creating a personal project from start to finish. You’ll begin by learning the basics of 3D printing and design — from your very first test print to building a custom film-developing tank. Over the course of several sessions, you will learn to design and 3D print your own custom film-developing tank, learn to shoot with an 8mm camera, and develop your own film — culminating in a public screening of your work at BYOB and De Kunsthal.
This series is especially aimed at young makers and creators who want to experiment hands-on with both technology and art. No prior knowledge is required — just curiosity and motivation.
You can follow the full program (5 sessions) or choose between two tracks:
- 3D printing track (2 sessions)
- 8mm analog filmmaking & developing track (3 sessions)
What to Expect
Session 1 – October 18 Introduction to 3D PrintingWhat is 3D printing? How does a printer actually work? Together we’ll explore key concepts such as supports, brim, infill, and slicing — all while creating your very first print.
Session 2 – October 25 Designing & Printing Your Own Tools From online 3D models to fully customized designs: learn how to adapt, remix, and create. You’ll work hands-on to design and print accessories for your very own DIY 8mm film-developing tank — bringing the digital into direct conversation with the analog.
Sessions 3 & 4 – November 8 & 9Introduction to 8mm FilmmakingStep into the world of analog film. Learn the technical essentials of working with a camera: light metering, aperture, shutter speed, and more. Then, put theory into practice by shooting your own footage. We are going oldschool and picking up an all manual motion picture format, 8mm. Learn how to shoot black and white moving picture film and develop it by yourself. Each of the participants will have 4 minutes of film to shoot your own short film. Or we create a collective movie project together where each participant will make a chapter in a larger story. At the end of our sessions we will project the films we made just like they used to from the 30’s up to the 70’s.
Session 5 – November 15Film Developing
Time to get your hands wet! Using your self-made tank, you’ll develop the 8mm film you shot, experiencing the tactile magic of analog image-making from start to finish.
SCREENING – November 29 (BYOB) / December 5 (De Kunsthal)Celebrate your work with others! The workshop culminates in a shared screening where all participants’ films will be projected. Why Join? This series offers a one-of-a-kind combination of digital fabrication and old-school film artistry. You’ll not only learn how to design and 3D print, but also dive into the enchanting world of analog cinema — discovering how these two seemingly different practices can merge into something entirely new.
