Rooted in Love is an ongoing EP project that released in April and serves as the foundation for a Deluxe edition developed during the residency at Broei. In the Belgian cultural landscape, contemporary R&B remains heavily underrepresented, despite its deep roots in collective music-making, emotional expression, and performance. Through this project, I aim to contribute to the visibility and development of R&B as an artistic practice within Belgium. During the six-month residency, I want to expand Rooted in Love by creating new songs for the Deluxe edition. This period will be used for writing, recording, and artistic research, working closely with my band — which is largely Ghent-based — and collaborating with different artists and choirs. A strong focus lies on vocal exploration, particularly backing vocals, harmonies, and collective arrangements, as a way to translate influences from Gospel, soul, and elements of jazz into a contemporary R&B language. Alongside the studio process, the residency will function as a space to experiment with live performance formats and collective presence. The research will work toward an EP Deluxe concert, or multiple public moments depending on the structure of the residency, inviting audiences into R&B as a genre rooted in connection, intimacy, and shared experience.

Rooted in Love is een doorlopend EP-project dat in april is uitgebracht en als basis dient voor een Deluxe-editie die tijdens de residentie bij Broei wordt ontwikkeld. In het Belgische culturele landschap blijft hedendaagse R&B sterk ondervertegenwoordigd, ondanks de diepe wortels ervan in collectief musiceren, emotionele expressie en performance. Met dit project wil ik bijdragen aan de zichtbaarheid en ontwikkeling van R&B als artistieke praktijk in België. Tijdens de residentie van zes maanden wil ik Rooted in Love uitbreiden door nieuwe nummers te creëren voor de Deluxe-editie. Deze periode zal worden gebruikt voor het schrijven, opnemen en artistiek onderzoek, in nauwe samenwerking met mijn band en met verschillende artiesten en koren. Er ligt een sterke focus op vocale verkenning, met name achtergrondzang, harmonieën en collectieve arrangementen, als een manier om invloeden uit gospel, soul en elementen van jazz te vertalen naar een hedendaagse R&B-taal. Naast het studioproces zal de residentie fungeren als een ruimte om te experimenteren met live-uitvoeringsformats en collectieve aanwezigheid. Het onderzoek zal leiden tot een EP Deluxe-concert, of meerdere publieke momenten, afhankelijk van de structuur van de residentie, waarbij het publiek wordt uitgenodigd in R&B als een genre dat geworteld is in verbinding, intimiteit en gedeelde ervaring.
